Wireless to the Home (WTTH) with MTN
Business Uncapped Wireless from MTN:
If you spend most of your waking hours on the go, then a mobile plan packed with LTE is a must. LTE works off of the extensive mobile networks in South Africa. But, if you are home-based/office based, have a strong wireless connection in your area, wireless will allow you to perform professional and personal tasks with ease.
Similar to LTE, wireless also requires the services of a data provider and a router, but the main difference is that wireless (not LTE) needs an outdoor radio installation/dish as it does not work off of the mobile network infrastructure like LTE does.
Mobile LTE is a capped solution with unlimited speed:
requiring a sim enabled device (e.g., router, cell phone, etc), mobile data and connectivity to a mobile network tower.
Wireless is an uncapped solution with a fixed speed:
requiring direct line of site to the service providers tower, a router and radio dish installation.
Business Uncapped Wireless from MTN:
Some of its benefits are:
- Fibre-like speeds at a fraction of the cost
- Available in remote areas where fibre is not available
- uncapped with 1:20 contention ratio
- Asymmetrical speeds with 4:1 download/upload ratio
- Low cost and reliable using wireless access technology
- 5 business days turnaround
- If pre-installation speed test does not produce the ordered bandwidth speed, client can opt-out of the service at no penalty or cost.
cons:
- This solution is unfortunately not a mobile solution and is a fixed installation at a specific address
- The hardware and service can only be installed onsite by an authorised installer, but gives peace of mind for the quality and reliability of the service for many years to come
- The service requires a clear LOS (line of sight) to the tower you are connecting to, Therefore, trees and buildings between you and one of the towers could prevent you from having the outdoor radio installed at the visually desired location on your roof.

Where cell towers are plentiful but internet service providers may be less able to lay new infrastructure for fibre, wireless internet doesn’t offer the same high speeds that fibre internet does, but it is faster and more reliable than other rural options, like dial-up or satellite internet.
While both LTE and Wireless serve the same need – to communicate data over the internet – they differ in terms of their technology, range, speed, performance and bandwidth. Many people opt for both wireless and mobile LTE services. Fixed wireless has them covered while they are at home or work, during which they do their heavy bandwidth activities. They then use a mobile LTE service to keep their mobile devices connected when on the move.
With the strengths and weaknesses of the two connectivity sources in mind (Fixed LTE & Wireless), it’s safe to say that the best option will ultimately depend on your needs.
